Updated November 4, 2026
The NFL trade deadline closes the trade market for the season, but it does not freeze rosters. Teams keep adding players every week through free agency, waiver claims, practice squad signings and returns from injured reserve. This guide covers what changes after the 2026 deadline and the paths a club can still use to fill a hole. For how the deadline itself works, including what counts as a trade, see our explainer on how the NFL trade deadline works. We will not repeat that here.
The November 10 Cutoff
The league's 2026 important dates calendar states it plainly: "All trading ends for 2026 at 4:00 p.m., New York time" on November 10. That is 1 PM PT on Tuesday, November 10. The same calendar says the trading period for 2027 begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 11, 2027, when the new league year starts. Between those two dates, no player contracts or draft picks change teams by trade.
November 9: The Contract Date Fans Miss
One day before the deadline, a quieter rule kicks in. Per the NFL calendar, any increase in a player's 2026 salary from a renegotiation or extension received by the league's Management Council after 4 p.m. ET on November 9 (1 PM PT) is treated as signing bonus and prorated over the full term of the contract, including 2026. In plain terms, late-season raises still happen, but the salary cap accounting changes after that date, which is why some extensions land just before it.
Free Agents Can Still Sign
A player who is not under contract can sign with any team at any time during the season. The NFL's Football Operations contract glossary explains that when a player's contract is terminated, he is either free to negotiate with any team or subject to waivers, depending on his experience and the time of year. Midseason free agents are usually veterans released earlier in the year or players coming back from injury, so this route tends to fill depth spots rather than replace stars.
One related date is coming. Per the NFL calendar, November 17 at 4 p.m. ET is the deadline for clubs to sign unsigned franchise and transition players and certain tendered free agents. Players in those categories who remain unsigned after that are prohibited from playing in the NFL in 2026.
Waiver Claims Continue, and Veterans Join Them November 11
Waivers are the main way teams pick up players after the deadline, and the deadline changes who goes through them. Per the Football Operations glossary, a player with fewer than four credited seasons is subject to waivers whenever he is released. A player with four or more credited seasons is not subject to waivers from the day after the Super Bowl through the trade deadline. After that, his contract must go through waivers too.
The 2026 calendar puts that switch on November 11: "Players with at least four previous pension-credited seasons are subject to the waiver system for the remainder of the regular season and postseason." That means a veteran released in late November cannot simply pick his next team. Any club can claim him first, and the claiming team takes on his existing contract. Our guide to how NFL waivers work covers claiming order and timing.

Practice Squad Moves Keep Rosters Moving
Each team can carry a practice squad of 17 players, as long as one qualifies as an International Player, per the NFL calendar. Those players are the fastest in-house replacements. A team can elevate one for a game or sign him to the 53-man roster outright. Our practice squad rules explainer covers elevations and pay.
Teams can also sign another club's practice squad player, as long as they put him on their own active roster. This week gave a live example. After Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley were hurt, the Ravens signed quarterback Kedon Slovis off the Green Bay Packers' practice squad, according to the Ravens' official site. That kind of move is not a trade, so the deadline does not stop it.
Returns From Injured Reserve Work Like Additions
For many contenders, the biggest post-deadline addition is a player already on the roster. A player who went on injured reserve during the season can be designated for return after missing at least four games, and each team gets eight designations for the regular season. Our explainer on how NFL injured reserve works has the full rules.
What Teams Cannot Do After the Deadline
- Trade players or draft picks until 4 p.m. ET on March 11, 2027.
- Release a vested veteran straight into free agency. From November 11 he goes through waivers.
- Sign an unsigned franchise, transition or tendered free agent after the November 17 cutoff.
