Javonte Williams runs the ball beside the headline Cowboys 38 Eagles 21, Javonte Williams runs it up

Cowboys Beat Eagles 38-21 Behind Javonte Williams' 155 Yards

The Dallas Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-21 on Monday night, running for 204 yards in Philadelphia to move to 3-4 and tighten the NFC East race. It was the one thing Dallas hadn't done all season: run the ball and keep running it.

The numbers that mattered

Javonte Williams carried 25 times for a career-high 155 yards and a touchdown. Per the Cowboys, that is the most by a Dallas running back since Ezekiel Elliott's 159 against Tampa Bay in December 2016. As a team Dallas ran 38 times for 204 yards, after coming in last in the league in carries per game.

Dak Prescott threw for 212 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Two of the scores went to CeeDee Lamb, one to George Pickens. NFL.com notes it was the first game this season where both receivers found the end zone. Prescott also ran in a two-point conversion after Lamb's 16-yard touchdown put Dallas back in front, 28-21, late in the third quarter.

Brandon Aubrey hit field goals from 55, 27 and 24 yards. The Cowboys scored on seven of nine possessions and put up a season-best 416 yards.

Philadelphia is in trouble

The Eagles are 2-5 and have lost five straight, their longest skid since 2016, per AP. Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season with blood clots in his lungs. Backup Tanner McKee went 23 of 35 for 211 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and that pick was the play of the night: DeMarvion Overshown, back from a Week 1 hamstring injury, picked it off in the fourth quarter with Philly still within reach.

Saquon Barkley returned and was effective when he was on the field, 71 yards on nine touches, but left in the third quarter with what was labeled a back injury, according to NFL.com. Philadelphia was also without its top two receivers, DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks.

Where it leaves the division

The Giants lead the NFC East at 4-2-1. Dallas is the only team in the division with two division wins. The Cowboys get a home stretch next, and if the run game travels, they are a real threat to take this thing. The Eagles need answers at quarterback fast, and there isn't an obvious one on the roster.

The takeaway: Dallas finally looked like the balanced team it wanted to be in August. One game doesn't make a trend, but 204 rushing yards against a division rival on the road is a good place to start.
