Rays Beat Brewers 4-3 in 12 on Williamson Walk-Off

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night, winning on pinch-hitter Ben Williamson's walk-off at Tropicana Field. Milwaukee still leads the series 3-1, after coming within three outs of its first championship.

How it happened

Brewers rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt hit a tiebreaking solo homer off Ian Seymour in the top of the 12th to make it 3-2. Seymour then kept it there.

In the bottom half, Junior Caminero led off with a grounder that third baseman Joey Ortiz threw away, per AP. Liam Hicks singled. Jonny DeLuca singled up the middle to score pinch-runner Cedric Mullins and tie it. Chandler Simpson singled to load the bases, and Milwaukee went to a five-man infield.

It didn't matter. Pinch-hitter Ben Williamson, who had been 1 for 15 in the postseason according to AP, chopped one over first baseman Jake Bauers into right field. Pinch-runner Nick Fortes scored, and the game was over after four hours and 20 minutes.

Rare company

MLB.com's Sarah Langs has the history. The Rays are the fifth team to force a Game 5 in the World Series after trailing 3-0, joining the 2024 Yankees, 1970 Reds, 1937 Giants and 1910 Cubs. None of those four forced a Game 6.

It was also the 17th walk-off win by a team facing elimination in World Series history, and the first since David Freese and the Cardinals in Game 6 in 2011, on the same date, Oct. 27.

Across all best-of-seven postseason series, only one team has ever come back from 0-3 to win: the 2004 Red Sox in the ALCS.

The series so far

  • Game 1: Brewers 3, Rays 2
  • Game 2: Brewers 5, Rays 4
  • Game 3: Brewers 10, Rays 1
  • Game 4: Rays 4, Brewers 3 (12 innings)
  • Game 5: Wednesday, Oct. 28, 8 PM ET (5 PM PT) at Tropicana Field, Fox
  • Game 6 and 7, if needed: Oct. 30 and 31 in Milwaukee

Neither franchise has won a World Series. Milwaukee still needs one win. Tampa Bay needs three, and history says that's a long shot. But the Rays get at least one more night.
